NVIDIA Interview Process: Hiring Steps and Questions

The short answer

NVIDIA hires in three stages: you apply, you interview, and you get an offer. Interviews are by phone, video or in person, usually 30 to 60 minutes each, with the hiring manager, team members and people from other groups; technical candidates may do a coding exercise, usually on HackerRank. NVIDIA says you’ll complete an in-person interview at its office before you can be considered for an offer, and most candidates get a decision within weeks of their first interview.

  • Using unapproved outside tools such as ChatGPT during an interview disqualifies you, NVIDIA says.
  • NVIDIA recommends applying to your top three to five roles.
  • Interns typically have phone interviews only, NVIDIA says; ask your recruiter whether the onsite requirement applies to you.
  • NVIDIA doesn’t publish a list of interview questions or how interviews are scored.

NVIDIA's hiring process has three stages: search and apply, interviews, and joining the team. Interviews usually last 30 to 60 minutes each, technical candidates may do a coding exercise on HackerRank, and you complete an in-person interview at an NVIDIA office before you can be considered for an offer.

The process details below come from NVIDIA's How We Hire page, and the values from its Code of Conduct. Where NVIDIA doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the NVIDIA hiring process?

You apply for a role, a recruiter contacts you if there's a match, you go through several interviews, and you get a decision. NVIDIA says the number of interviews depends on the role. For full-time roles, expect phone interviews followed by virtual or in-person interviews; interns typically have phone interviews only.

NVIDIA may also invite you to interview for a different role if it fits your background better, or if a new opening comes up while you're in the process. If you interview with several teams, feedback may be shared between them.

How do you apply to NVIDIA?

Apply on NVIDIA's careers site, or use your LinkedIn profile. You can upload a resume for more tailored job matches. NVIDIA's advice is to make sure your resume lines up with the position you want.

There's no official limit on how many roles you can apply for, but NVIDIA recommends limiting yourself to the top three to five roles that best match your interests and experience. If you know someone at NVIDIA, ask them to refer you through the internal job board before you apply, then watch for an email from NVIDIA HR.

What is the NVIDIA interview process?

Interviews can be by phone, by video or in person, and NVIDIA says they're usually one-on-one, small group or panel interviews of 30 to 60 minutes each. You meet the hiring manager, members of the team and employees from other groups.

NVIDIA doesn't publish how many interviews each role has, what each one covers or how they're scored. Your recruiter is the person to ask; NVIDIA encourages you to use them for questions.

Does NVIDIA have a coding test?

For technical roles, yes. NVIDIA says technical candidates may complete a coding exercise, usually on HackerRank, on a whiteboard or a laptop NVIDIA provides. It doesn't publish how long the exercise is or what it contains. Our guide to HackerRank tests explains how the platform works.

NVIDIA is explicit about AI: using unapproved outside tools, such as ChatGPT, during the interview disqualifies you.

What happens in the NVIDIA onsite interview?

NVIDIA says you will complete an onsite, in-person interview at its office before you can be considered for an offer. Bring a physical, valid government-issued photo ID; photos on your phone and digital copies aren't accepted. You sign in at a visitor system, get a temporary badge and stay with your host throughout.

During the final interview, NVIDIA offers an optional 15-minute Insider Chat with a member of one of its Community Resource Groups. NVIDIA says it has no influence on the hiring decision. Dress is business casual, and NVIDIA says to wear what's comfortable.

What happens after the NVIDIA interviews?

Most candidates get a decision within weeks of their first interview. If you're selected, your recruiter sends the offer; once you sign and return it, onboarding starts and you get an email with orientation details. If you have a deadline from another offer, tell your recruiter early so they can try to speed things up.

What does NVIDIA look for?

NVIDIA's How We Hire page doesn't list formal hiring criteria. Its Code of Conduct lists five core values, which are a good guide to what interviewers will probe:

ValueHow NVIDIA describes it
Innovation"Dream big, start small. Take risks, learn fast." Innovate from first principles, not consensus.
Intellectual honesty"Seek truth, learn from mistakes, share learnings." Acknowledge weaknesses; finding the origin of a mistake isn't about blame.
Speed and agility"Learn, adapt, shape the world." Adjust course quickly to new realities.
Excellence and determinationMeasure against perfection, which NVIDIA calls the Speed-of-Light test, and play a long game.
One team"Do what's best for the company." Share information and disagree openly and directly.

NVIDIA's careers page adds that "the project is the boss", even for its CEO.

Common NVIDIA interview questions and how to answer them

NVIDIA doesn't publish its interview questions. The questions below are ones to prepare for, based on its published process and values. Technical rounds will also test your skills for the specific role.

1. Why NVIDIA, and why this team?

Name the team's work and a recent NVIDIA product or announcement that relates to it. Because NVIDIA may route you to other roles, also say what kind of work you want, so they can match you well.

2. Walk me through a project on your resume.

Expect depth: why you made each decision, what failed and what you'd change. Explain the first principles behind your choices, which ties to how NVIDIA describes innovation.

3. Solve this coding problem.

On HackerRank or a whiteboard, clarify the problem, start with a correct solution, then improve it. Explain your reasoning as you go. Don't use outside tools, including AI assistants, unless NVIDIA has approved them.

4. Tell me about a mistake you made and what you learned.

This tests intellectual honesty. Own the mistake plainly, explain how you traced its cause, and say what you shared with your team afterwards. NVIDIA's values describe finding the origin of a mistake as learning, not blame.

5. Tell me about a time you had to change course quickly.

This is speed and agility. Describe the new information, how fast you adjusted, and the result. Use the STAR method to keep it tight.

6. Tell me about a time you took a risk on a new approach.

NVIDIA's innovation value is "Dream big, start small. Take risks, learn fast." Show a small experiment that tested a big idea, and what you did with the result.

7. How do you decide when your work is good enough?

NVIDIA measures against perfection, its Speed-of-Light test. Explain how you set a target based on what's physically or technically possible, and how you balance that against deadlines.

8. Tell me about a disagreement with a colleague.

NVIDIA's One Team value says it disagrees "openly and directly" and focuses on substance. Show you argued the point with evidence, then committed to the team's decision.

9. Tell me about working with another team to deliver something.

You'll meet people from other groups during interviews, so expect cross-team questions. Describe how you shared information and what you did when priorities clashed.

10. Tell me about a long project you saw through.

Excellence and determination includes not being deterred by long efforts that are worth it. Pick a project that took sustained effort, and explain what kept it on track.

11. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask what the team is working on next, how success is measured in the role, and how the team works with other groups.

Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.

How to prepare for the NVIDIA interview

  1. Apply to three to five roles at most, as NVIDIA recommends, and tailor your resume to each.
  2. Ask for a referral through an employee before you apply, if you have one.
  3. Learn NVIDIA's five core values and prepare a story for each.
  4. For technical roles, practise on HackerRank and on a whiteboard, explaining your reasoning out loud.
  5. Prepare a deep walk-through of two or three projects you know inside out.
  6. Do a mock interview with someone who'll push on your technical choices.
  7. For the onsite, bring a physical government-issued photo ID.
  8. Ask your recruiter how many interviews to expect and what each will cover.

Practising realistic work tasks

NVIDIA's interviews test whether you can do the work, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with NVIDIA and doesn't use NVIDIA's interview questions or assessments.
