Mercor Interview Questions and AI Interview Process

The short answer

Mercor’s interview is an AI interview of about 20 minutes, on video, with role-specific questions: some dig deep into your past experience, others test language or reasoning. Around it, the hiring process runs from your profile and resume to assessments, a paid work trial for some projects, and an offer with onboarding checks.

  • The AI interview is Mercor’s only screening method. There’s no option to interview with a person instead.
  • You can take a free practice interview, and retake an official one up to three times, though hiring managers can see your retake count.
  • AI tools are allowed only for grammar and wording checks, not for writing your answers.
  • Mercor doesn’t publish an end-to-end timeline or how interviews are scored.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations with a scored report on where you lost marks. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Mercor and doesn’t use Mercor’s interview questions or assessments.

Mercor hires experts for contract projects through its platform, and its interview is run by an AI interviewer. The interview takes about 20 minutes and asks role-specific questions, from deep dives into your past experience to language or reasoning tasks. Before and after it come your profile, assessments, sometimes a paid work trial, and onboarding.

Everything below comes from Mercor's talent documentation and careers page, linked as we go. Where Mercor doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Mercor hiring process?

You create an account, apply to listings, complete an AI interview and any assessments the role needs, and, if you're a match, get an offer to join a project. Some projects add a paid work trial first. Mercor's offers are contract roles, and the offer page sets out your independent-contractor status.

There's also a shortcut. Mercor says passing a recommended assessment gets you considered automatically for new roles that use it, and that experts it marks as prequalified can receive an Instant Offer without applying. Prequalification draws on your interview and assessment performance, your skills and your availability.

How do you apply to Mercor?

Sign up at work.mercor.com with your email (Mercor sends a verification link each time you sign in) or with Google. Then open Explore, choose a listing and click Apply Now to see its checklist. Mercor's application guide says:

  • Your resume must be a text-based PDF, one to two pages and under 2 MB, with a simple layout and clear headings such as Education, Experience and Skills. Avoid images and tables.
  • The checklist varies by role. Typical steps are your resume, the required assessments and confirming your work authorisation.
  • Completed assessments carry over to other applications that use them.
  • Listings can close at any time, so don't leave an application half-finished.
  • Some roles accept LinkedIn Easy Apply. If your profile fits, Mercor emails you a link to finish the application on its site.

You can't withdraw a submitted application, and Mercor says it can't give individual feedback on rejections.

What is the Mercor interview process?

The interview is a video conversation with an AI interviewer. Mercor's AI interview FAQ says the interviewer asks role-specific questions, generates a transcript of your answers and evaluates your performance for the listing.

  • Length: most interviews take about 20 minutes, though some are shorter or longer.
  • Content: some interviews are technical and require deep discussion of your prior experience. Others test language or reasoning skills. Some include a whiteboard, which saves automatically.
  • Language: English, unless the listing says otherwise.
  • Set-up: a computer with a working camera and microphone, your full face in view, and a quiet room. Mercor recommends headphones and an external microphone. Some interviews need you to share your entire screen.
  • Browser: Chrome is recommended. Edge and Safari are supported; Firefox and mobile browsers aren't.
  • Timing: you don't have to start straight away. Pick a time that suits you.
  • Only once per interview: if another application uses the same interview, your result carries over.

The AI interview is Mercor's standard and only screening method. Mercor says it can't run the interview with a person, by chat or by phone instead.

Unlike a one-way video interview, the AI interviewer talks with you. You can ask it to repeat or clarify a question, and it may interject if you go quiet for a while. If it interrupts before you've finished, tell it you weren't done.

Can you practise or retake the Mercor AI interview?

Yes. Mercor offers a free practice interview that isn't tied to any application, isn't shared with companies and doesn't affect future opportunities. You can take it as many times as you like.

You can retake an official interview up to three times across all the applications that use it. A retake resets your application progress, and Mercor notes that hiring managers can see your retake count, so it asks you to keep retakes for technical problems. Only your most recent attempt is evaluated. An attempt that ends much earlier than planned is marked "Interview too short" and has to be retaken, which uses up a retake.

What are Mercor's assessments?

Assessments test the skills a project needs. Mercor's assessments guide says they evaluate:

  • your domain expertise and experience;
  • how you approach real-world problems;
  • your ability to follow instructions and handle ambiguity;
  • the quality and clarity of your written or spoken answers.

Most are written or multiple-choice forms. Some roles add a cognitive or task-based assessment with a practice step first. Most assessments allow only one submission, so read the instructions and check your answers before you submit. Most have no strict time limit; a timed one shows the time on its start screen and can't be paused once it starts. Some disable copy and paste, and human reviewers may check your work. Feedback is only available for some assessments, and Mercor Support can't share scores.

What is a Mercor work trial?

Some projects send a work trial before a full contract: a one-off, paid assessment on a project-like task. You sign the documents on its checklist, then complete the task by the trial end date, which is strict. Each expert is paid for only one work trial, so if you get more than one, choose.

After you submit, the project lead reviews your work. You either get a final offer to join the project or you're not selected. Mercor says payment depends on a complete, good-faith submission, whether or not you're selected. Mercor doesn't give individual feedback on trials.

What happens after you get a Mercor offer?

Offers appear in the Offers tab of your dashboard. Mercor's onboarding guide says you sign the offer letter first, which unlocks the rest:

  • a Worker Agreement (Mercor's terms of work) and a CIIAA (a confidentiality and inventions assignment agreement);
  • a tax form, W-9 for US persons or W-8BEN for others;
  • ID verification with a government ID and a short selfie video, usually repeated for each new offer;
  • a background check where required, which can cover identity, credentials and criminal history depending on your location and role;
  • payment set-up and any project tools.

How long does the Mercor hiring process take?

Mercor doesn't publish a timeline. It says you're notified when your application moves to the next stage, that the confirmation screen after you submit shows the anticipated timeline, and that you're welcome to keep applying to other roles while you wait.

Common Mercor interview questions and how to answer them

Mercor doesn't publish its AI interview questions and asks candidates not to share specific questions or screenshots. The questions below are ones to prepare for, based on what Mercor says its interviews and assessments evaluate. Keep answers concise, and use the STAR method for questions about past work.

1. Walk me through your background and the expertise relevant to this role.

Mercor says its questions are role-specific, and technical interviews go deep into your prior experience. Open with the two or three things on your resume that match the listing. Make sure your resume is up to date before you apply: Mercor says you can't withdraw a submitted application.

2. Tell me about a complex project in your field and the decisions you made.

Mercor says technical interviews involve deep discussion of your prior experience. Pick a project you know inside out, and explain the problem, the options, why you chose one and the result.

3. Explain a core concept in your field to someone outside it.

Clarity is one of the things Mercor's assessments evaluate. Use plain language, one example and no jargon you haven't defined.

4. How do you check your work for accuracy?

Mercor's assessments look at the quality and clarity of your written or spoken answers. Describe your actual routine: checking sources, re-running calculations, testing edge cases, or asking a colleague to review.

5. Tell me about a time you followed detailed guidelines exactly.

Following instructions is on Mercor's list. Give an example where precision mattered, such as a style guide, a regulatory standard or a client specification, and what happened because you followed it.

6. How do you handle a task when the instructions are unclear?

Mercor also lists handling ambiguity. Show that you make a reasonable assumption, state it, flag the gap to whoever owns the task, and keep moving.

7. Tell me about a mistake you caught, in your own work or someone else's.

Show attention to detail and honesty: what the error was, how you found it, how you fixed it and what you changed to stop it recurring.

8. Talk me through how you'd solve this problem.

For reasoning or technical questions, think out loud. Say what you're assuming, work step by step, and use pen and paper or the whiteboard if the interview has one. Avoid long silences, which can prompt the AI to interject.

9. Why are you interested in this project?

Connect your expertise to the work in the listing. Mercor says on its site that it organises human intelligence to power the AI economy, so show you understand that your judgement as an expert is what the project needs.

10. What's your availability?

Mercor's matching system uses your availability, among other things, to decide who's prequalified for offers. Give an honest answer and keep it up to date in your profile.

Interviewing for a job on Mercor's own team

Mercor's careers page lists full-time roles too. It doesn't publish the interview process for them. It says its teams work in person from offices in San Francisco, New York and London, and lists six values: Can-Do Attitude, User Obsession, High Standards, Intensity, Simplicity and Time Travelers (thinking ahead while executing today). Prepare a STAR story for each, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.

How to prepare for the Mercor interview

  1. Take the free practice interview before your official one.
  2. Update your resume first, as a text-based PDF of one or two pages. Mercor uses it to recommend assessments and match you to roles.
  3. Test your set-up: Chrome on a computer, camera, microphone and screen sharing. Complete the waiting room's set-up checks.
  4. Choose a quiet, well-lit room and use headphones if you can.
  5. Have pen, paper and a calculator within reach if the role might need them.
  6. Practise speaking concisely about your work, ideally in a mock interview with someone who'll push back.
  7. Read the instructions on every assessment before you start, since most allow one submission.
  8. Write your own answers. Mercor's LLM policy allows AI tools only for grammar and wording checks.

Practising realistic work tasks

Mercor's assessments and work trials test how you do the actual work, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Mercor and doesn't use Mercor's interview questions or assessments.
