Flipkart Interview Questions and Hiring Process

The short answer

Flipkart’s hiring process has seven steps: application, application assessment (resume shortlisting), a technical phone screen for some roles, an onsite interview, a hiring committee review, the offer, and joining. For software engineers, Flipkart’s own prep guide lists a machine coding round, a data structures round, a design round, and team and culture fitment rounds.

  • An independent hiring committee, with the interviewers and recruiters, makes the final call.
  • You can only have one active application at a time.
  • If you don’t clear an interview, Flipkart applies a six-month cooling period before you can reapply.
  • The culture round tests fit with Flipkart’s values; its careers site lists Audacity, Bias for Action, Customer First, Integrity and Inclusion.

Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs free practice job simulations with a scored report. Cohesyve isn’t affiliated with Flipkart and doesn’t use Flipkart’s interview questions.

Flipkart hires through seven steps: you apply, recruiters and hiring managers assess your application, some roles have a technical phone screen, you attend an onsite interview, a hiring committee reviews the feedback, Flipkart rolls out an offer, and you join. Flipkart calls the process "transparent and straightforward" on its How We Hire page.

Everything below comes from Flipkart's careers site and the role-by-role interview prep guides it publishes. Where Flipkart doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Flipkart hiring process?

It is the seven-step process in the table above, from application to joining. Flipkart says different openings have different timelines and doesn't publish an overall length, so ask your recruiter how long your role usually takes.

A few rules from Flipkart's hiring FAQ shape how you should apply:

  • One application at a time. While your profile is under consideration for one role, you can't apply for another.
  • No page limit on resumes, though Flipkart asks for information that's "precise and to the point".
  • A six-month cooling period applies if you didn't clear your last interview. There's no limit on how many times you can apply overall.
  • Track your status on your Candidate Dashboard, and contact your assigned recruiter if you have questions.

Flipkart lists jobs and teams through the "Explore Jobs and Teams" link on flipkartcareers.com. The site's footer also warns: "Beware of fake Flipkart jobs and fraud employment agents." Apply through that site and be wary of anyone who contacts you outside it.

What is the Flipkart interview process?

For software, product and data science roles, Flipkart's interview resources page links a prep guide for each role. Each guide splits the process into two phases: an exploratory discussion and phone screen, then the onsite rounds. The guides are undated, so treat round lengths as a guide and confirm the plan with your recruiter.

RolePhase 1Phase 2 (onsite rounds)
Software Development Engineer (SDE)Exploratory discussion (30 min); technical phone screen (60 min)Machine coding (120 min); problem solving and data structures (60 min); design (60 min); team fitment (60 min); culture fitment (60 min)
Product ManagerExploratory discussion (30 min); technical phone screen (60 min)Problem solving; product thinking; business understanding; engineering understanding; team fitment; culture fitment (60 min each)
Data ScientistExploratory discussion (30 min); technical phone screen (60 min)Presentation (60 min, for candidates with significant past work or research); hands-on skills (120 min); depth in data science; depth in mathematical modelling; team fitment; culture fitment (60 min each)

Flipkart also publishes guides for senior software engineers, engineering managers, architects, product designers and UX researchers on the same page. It doesn't publish an interview process for supply chain, warehouse or delivery roles.

What happens in the application assessment?

Recruiters and hiring managers read your resume against the role. If they find your knowledge, skills and experience relevant, your resume is shortlisted and Flipkart contacts you about the next stages.

Flipkart's prep guides add one step here: once your CV is shortlisted, your recruiter sets up a 30-minute exploratory discussion with your potential hiring manager. It covers your past experience, expectations and aspirations. Flipkart asks you to be "concise, clear and prepared", and to use the call to understand the role's charter and scope.

What is in the Flipkart technical phone screen?

It is a 60-minute call with one of your potential peers, focused on your past work, your eligibility for the role and a few problem-solving questions. The interviewer may go deep into one project you've delivered.

Flipkart says you may or may not have this round, and that some candidates have more than one. Know everything on your resume well enough to explain it in detail.

What happens in the Flipkart onsite interview?

The onsite interview is a set of rounds that depend on your role, as in the table above. For engineers, Flipkart's SDE prep guide describes each one:

  • Machine coding (120 minutes). About 15 minutes to clarify the problem, about 90 minutes to write executable code on your laptop with one or two checkpoints, then about 15 minutes to demo it while the interviewer runs test cases. Flipkart wants code that is "executable, functionally correct, modular and readable" and can take new requirements with minimal changes.
  • Problem solving and data structures (60 minutes). One to three problems. The guide names arrays, linked lists, stacks, queues, hash maps, trees, graphs and heaps, and algorithm types including string manipulation, two pointers, searching, sorting, backtracking, bit manipulation and dynamic programming. This round is on paper or a whiteboard.
  • Design (60 minutes). Either system design (Flipkart's example: "Design Twitter") or object-oriented design ("Design a Parking Lot"). There is no single right answer; the interviewer wants to see how you gather requirements and weigh trade-offs.
  • Team fitment (60 minutes). With your potential team leader or hiring manager, covering your aspirations, motivations, self-awareness, leadership, stakeholder management, strengths and weaknesses.
  • Culture fitment (60 minutes). Tests fit with Flipkart's values through questions on past experiences, career aspirations, hypothetical scenarios, strengths and weaknesses.

Flipkart says you can use any programming language you're comfortable with, preferably a high-level one such as Java, C++, C# or Python, and that you must be proficient in the one you choose.

Does Flipkart have an online assessment?

Flipkart's careers site doesn't describe an online test or name a third-party assessment platform for experienced hires. The machine coding round is Flipkart's own hands-on coding exercise, done during the onsite interview.

For students, Flipkart's campus page describes Flipkart GRiD as "a technovation challenge", alongside Girls Who Code and its Women in Research, Engineering and Design programme. It doesn't publish GRiD's rounds or how GRiD relates to hiring, so check the details for each year's edition.

What does the Flipkart hiring committee do?

After the onsite rounds, interviewers send their feedback to a hiring committee. Flipkart says "an independent hiring committee, along with interviewers and recruiters, takes a collective call" on your performance, to keep decisions consistent across candidates. No single interviewer makes the decision alone, so every round counts.

What happens after the Flipkart interview?

Your recruiter shares your interview feedback and the next steps. If you're selected, Flipkart rolls out an offer; then you complete the paperwork and agree a joining date. Flipkart doesn't publish how long a decision takes and says timelines differ by opening. You'll also receive a feedback form about your interview experience.

Common Flipkart interview questions and how to answer them

These questions follow the rounds and topics Flipkart describes in its own prep guides. Flipkart doesn't publish its actual question bank.

1. Introduce yourself and walk me through your experience.

This opens the exploratory discussion and most rounds after it. Keep it to two minutes: your current role, the one or two projects that best match this job, and what you want next. Flipkart asks for "concise, clear and prepared" answers here, so rehearse it.

2. Tell me about a project you've worked on, in depth.

Expect this in the phone screen, where Flipkart says the interviewer "may deep dive into one of your projects". Pick a project you owned. Explain the problem, the design choices you made and why, what went wrong, and what you'd change. Be ready for follow-ups on scale, reliability and the trade-offs you accepted.

3. Here's a problem statement. Build a working solution in the time you have.

This is the machine coding round. Spend the first minutes asking questions until the scope is clear, sketch your classes before you type, and keep the code runnable at every checkpoint. Flipkart says separation of concerns matters, and that your code should take new requirements with minimum changes. Leave time for the demo, because the interviewer will run test cases against it.

4. Solve this data structures and algorithms problem.

Flipkart says it cares more about how you approach the problem than about a perfect answer. Clarify the input constraints, write a few test cases including edge cases, talk through your approach before coding, and state the time and space complexity. Dry-run your solution before you say you're done.

5. Design a system like Twitter, or design a parking lot.

These are Flipkart's own examples for the design round. Start by gathering requirements, because Flipkart calls that "the most important thing to do in the design interview". For system design, discuss data stores, caching, queues, scaling and the CAP theorem trade-offs. For object-oriented design, agree the structure before drawing the class diagram.

6. Why do you want to join Flipkart, and this team?

Flipkart's prep guide asks candidates to "understand what we do as a business" and how the role contributes to the company's vision. Name the team's problem space and connect it to something you've done. Flipkart's engineering page highlights India-focused work such as cash on delivery, no-cost EMIs and progressive web apps; referencing a real product decision shows you've done the reading.

7. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

This comes up in team and culture fitment. Give one strength with a short example from your work, and one real weakness with what you're doing about it. Flipkart says "nobody is perfect" and asks candidates to be authentic and candid, so a rehearsed non-weakness will land badly.

8. Tell me about a time you took a bold bet or challenged an established way of working.

This tests Audacity, which Flipkart describes as "We think big and take bold bets." Choose a case where you pushed for something new, explain the risk, and give the outcome even if it didn't fully work. Flipkart runs an annual Chandrayaan Award for the biggest risk that didn't work out, so a well-reasoned failed bet is a fair answer.

9. Tell me about a time you had to move fast without all the information.

This tests Bias for Action: "a strong sense of urgency to solve problems strategically." Show how you decided what was good enough to act on, how you limited the downside, and what you did when new information arrived.

10. Tell me about a time you solved a problem from the customer's point of view.

This tests Customer First: "We look at the world from our customers' point of view." The SDE guide adds that Flipkart goes deep into customer issues and resolves the root cause. Pick an example where you traced a user complaint or metric back to its cause and fixed that, and say how you measured the result.

11. Tell me about a time you did the right thing when it was harder.

This tests Integrity: "We strive to do what is right and do what we say we will do." Good examples include raising a problem early, correcting your own mistake or keeping a commitment under pressure. Keep it specific and avoid criticising former colleagues.

12. How have you worked with people whose views were different from yours?

This links to Inclusion, which Flipkart describes as valuing "the uniqueness in everyone". Describe how you brought a different perspective into a decision, or how you changed your own view after listening, and what it improved.

13. For product managers: estimate a number, or improve a product.

Flipkart's PM guide says guesstimates and metrics questions can come up in problem solving, and that the product thinking round starts from a "hazy" problem. State your assumptions, structure the estimate, then define success metrics for any product you propose. In the product thinking round, expect problems from consumer internet businesses such as e-commerce or content streaming; the business understanding round covers business strategy, the industry landscape and competitors from industries you've worked in.

How to prepare for a Flipkart interview

  1. Read the prep guide for your role on Flipkart's interview resources page. It lists the rounds and topics to revise.
  2. Practise machine coding under time pressure. Build a small working program in about 90 minutes, with clean classes and a demo at the end.
  3. Revise data structures and algorithms from the list in the SDE guide, coding on paper or a whiteboard as well as a laptop.
  4. Prepare design answers for one system design and one object-oriented design problem, talking through requirements and trade-offs out loud.
  5. Write one story for each value: Audacity, Bias for Action, Customer First, Integrity and Inclusion. Our STAR method guide shows how to structure them, and our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  6. Rehearse the phone screen. Our guide to the phone screening interview covers the basics.
  7. Do a mock interview with someone who will push back on your design choices.
  8. Prepare questions for your recruiter about the number of rounds, the team and the timeline.
