Figma's interview process has four steps on its early career page: an application, a recruiter screen, a skill assessment for some roles, and a virtual onsite with technical and non-technical interviews. Figma doesn't publish a separate process or timeline for experienced hires, and accounts on interview prep sites disagree, so we haven't used them.
Everything below comes from Figma's own careers pages, job postings and blog, linked as we go. Where Figma doesn't say something, we say so.
Figma hiring process at a glance
| Stage | What happens | Notes from Figma |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application | Apply on figma.com/careers. | Up to 5 applications in any rolling 30 days |
| 2. Recruiter screen | A recruiter contacts you about your background and skills. | Only if you're selected |
| 3. Skill assessment | A portfolio review, take-home activity or online assessment. | Some roles only; your recruiter shares details |
| 4. Virtual onsite | Technical and non-technical interviews, including a walk through your background with a potential mentor or manager. | Format depends on the role |
| 5. Offer | Figma doesn't describe this step publicly. | If hired, you attend in-person onboarding |
What is the Figma interview process?
It's an application, a recruiter screen, a skill assessment for some roles and a virtual onsite. That's how Figma's early career page lays it out. Figma's job postings add that all candidates keep their cameras on during video interviews, which Figma says is to protect the integrity of the process and make the connection more personal.
Cohesyve
Hiring for roles like the ones at Figma?
Cohesyve takes a job description, finds candidates, reaches out to them and runs an AI job simulation of the real work, then returns a ranked shortlist. Ten candidates free, no card.
How many jobs can you apply for at Figma?
Up to five in any rolling 30-day period. Figma's job postings also say you can't reapply to the same role while an application is active, or within 90 days of a rejection. Figma says the limits help candidates focus on roles that fit their skills, so pick the roles that match you best.
Figma's postings also encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every point in the job description.
What happens in the Figma recruiter screen?
If you're selected, a recruiter contacts you to talk about your background and skills. Figma doesn't publish the length or the questions. Be ready to explain your recent work, why Figma, and why this role.
Does Figma have an assessment?
Some roles do. Figma's early career page says the skill assessment may be a portfolio review, a take-home activity or an online assessment, and that your recruiter will share the details. Figma doesn't name the platform for any online assessment or publish what it contains.
What happens in the Figma virtual onsite?
You'll have technical and non-technical interviews, and you'll walk through your background with a potential mentor or manager. Figma's early career page describes the technical part by discipline:
| Role | What Figma says the interviews involve |
|---|---|
| Software engineering | A language-agnostic coding interview on data structures and algorithms, plus a behavioural interview with a team member |
| Data science | Interpreting and discussing analysis techniques based on data visuals; early career candidates also present a past project |
| Product design | A walk through your design portfolio, then a design exercise with a team member |
| PhD internships | Technical and non-technical interviews for the role, plus a presentation on your PhD research or a previous publication |
These descriptions are for early career and intern roles. For experienced roles, ask your recruiter what each interview covers.
How should you prepare a portfolio for Figma?
Figma's own blog post on landing a first product design role, which Figma links from its design job postings, gives this advice:
- Lead with your strongest project, one you can talk about naturally, with a clear problem and a reflective conclusion.
- Choose depth over breadth. A few well-explained projects beat a long list.
- Show why, not only what. Explain the reasoning behind each decision.
- Tell the whole story, including obstacles and what you'd do differently. If you lack metrics, say how you'd measure success.
- Make it easy to scan and free of errors. If a project is password-protected, put the password clearly in your application.
The same post recommends researching the company and role, preparing a few projects you can adapt to many questions, and using the STAR method for behavioural answers.
How long does the Figma hiring process take?
Figma doesn't publish a timeline. Its early career internships start in winter (January) or summer (May or June), and Figma's blog says early career hiring typically opens in the autumn for the following year's summer internships and full-time roles.
Common Figma interview questions
Figma doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, based on the interview formats Figma describes and its five values: Build community, Run with it, Love your craft, Grow as you go, and Play.
- "Walk me through a project in your portfolio." Product design candidates are asked to do this. Start with the problem, then your decisions and why, then what you'd change. Figma's blog says the why matters more than the what.
- "Why Figma?" Be specific: a feature you use, a team's work you admire, or the users you'd build for. Figma says "We build for builders."
- "Tell me about a time you took initiative without being asked." This maps to Run with it. Show a call you made, the risk, and the result.
- "Tell me about a piece of work you're proud of and why." This maps to Love your craft. Go deep on one detail you got right and why it mattered.
- "Tell me about feedback that changed your work." This maps to Grow as you go. Figma says everyone's a work in progress, so show what you learned.
- "How do you work with designers, engineers or product managers?" This maps to Build community. Give an example where collaboration made the result better.
- "Tell me about something you explored just for fun." This maps to Play. A side project or experiment works well.
- "Solve this data structures and algorithms problem." For engineering roles. Figma says the interview is language-agnostic, so use the language you're strongest in and talk through your approach.
- "What does this chart tell you, and how would you analyse it further?" For data science roles. Figma says to come ready to interpret data visuals and discuss techniques.
- "Let's work through this design problem together." For product design roles. Ask about the user and the constraints before you start drawing.
- "Tell me about a project that didn't go as planned." Figma's blog advises telling the whole story, including obstacles and what you'd do differently. Explain what went wrong and your part in it.
- "What questions do you have for us?" Figma's blog recommends specific, thoughtful questions over surface-level ones.

How to prepare for the Figma interview process
- Apply selectively. You have five applications in any 30 days, so choose the roles that fit you best.
- Ask your recruiter which stages you'll have, and whether there's a portfolio review, take-home or online assessment.
- Prepare your portfolio walkthrough if you're a designer, following Figma's own blog advice above.
- Practise explaining your reasoning out loud, whether it's code, analysis or a design decision.
- Prepare a STAR story for each Figma value.
- Set up for video with your camera on, since Figma requires it.
- Do a mock interview with someone who'll give honest feedback.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Design exercises and technical rounds reward judgement on real work, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Figma and doesn't use its assessments or questions.
