Epic Systems, the healthcare software company based in Verona, Wisconsin, says it values "curiosity, ingenuity, leadership, and perseverance", and that you'll take ownership of your projects. The interview questions below are built around those qualities, and each comes with how to answer it for Epic specifically.
Epic doesn't publish its interview questions. Everything about the process here comes from Epic's own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Epic doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Epic Systems hiring process?
You apply, hear about the role from someone at Epic, complete skills assessments, have a final interview, and receive an offer, followed by a visit to Madison. Epic lays this out on its application process page, and says the process "varies slightly from role to role" because it hires for many kinds of position.
Epic's careers site lists roles in software development, technical solutions engineering, project management, quality management, training, hosting, facilities and culinary, among others. Read the page for your job family before you apply; each one explains the work, the travel and what Epic looks for.

How do you apply to Epic?
Epic says all its roles need "a quick application": you upload a resume and answer a few brief questions. Epic expects you to represent yourself honestly at every stage, starting with your resume and application.
What is the "learn more about the role" step?
A member of Epic's team gives you an overview of the role you applied for. Epic doesn't describe the format. Treat it as a two-way conversation: have questions ready about the day-to-day work, travel and training, because the answers help you decide whether to continue.
What are the Epic Systems skills assessments?
Epic says its assessments "include logic and reasoning questions and require no prep work". It doesn't publish how many assessments there are, how long they take, how they're scored or whether you can retake them. Treat test names, question counts and time limits you read on other sites as unconfirmed.
Because Epic says no preparation is needed, the main thing is to give the assessments your full attention:
- Pick a quiet time and place where you won't be interrupted.
- Read each question fully before answering.
- Do your own work. Epic says candidates must represent themselves honestly in assessments, and that if you're unsure whether outside aid is permitted you should ask your HR contact first.
If you want to understand the general format of reasoning tests, our guide to psychometric assessments explains how cognitive ability tests work. That's background, not a description of Epic's tests.
What is the Epic Systems interview process?
Epic describes one final interview, which "helps us get to know you while you learn more about the job and what it's like to work at Epic". It doesn't publish the format, the length or who you'll meet, and those may differ by role. Your recruiter can tell you what to expect.
Expect questions about how you think through problems, how you learn, and why you want to work on healthcare software. Prepare examples from school, work or projects using the STAR method.
What happens after the Epic interview?
Epic says it will reach out as soon as it makes a decision. If you receive an offer, Epic invites you on a trip to Madison, at its expense, to explore the city and Epic's campus.
How long does the Epic hiring process take?
Epic doesn't publish a timeline for the process or for any step in it.
What does Epic look for in candidates?
Epic's careers pages are fairly specific:
| Role family | What Epic says |
|---|---|
| All roles | "We value curiosity, ingenuity, leadership, and perseverance." You'll take ownership of your projects. |
| Software development | You invent software and move it "from idea to implementation". Developers go on three or four immersion trips to healthcare organisations in their first year, and around two a year after that. |
| Technical solutions engineering | "Inquisitive, analytical minds who want to understand how things work. No specific programming expertise is required." |
| Project management | "No experience in software or project management is required", but "an interest in tech is a must". Project managers travel 25 to 60% of the time. |
| Quality management | Curiosity and creativity in testing, to find every way an end user might use the product. |
Epic also calls itself employee-owned and developer-led, and says its software exists to help people get well, help people stay well and help future generations be healthier.
Epic Systems interview questions and how to answer them
Use real examples, and keep each answer tied to one of the qualities Epic names: curiosity, ingenuity, leadership, perseverance and ownership.
1. Why Epic?
Be specific. Talk about building software that clinicians and patients rely on, about owning your work, or about something on Epic's careers pages for your role. Avoid answers that would fit any tech company.
2. Why healthcare software?
Epic's careers site opens with the patients and doctors who depend on its software. If you have a personal connection to healthcare, share it briefly. If not, explain what draws you to work with a visible effect on people.
3. Tell me about a problem you solved that nobody had solved before.
This tests ingenuity. Explain the problem, the options you considered, why you chose your approach and what happened.
4. Describe a project you owned from start to finish.
Epic says its developers own projects "from idea to implementation", and its careers home page says you'll take ownership of your projects. Show that you made decisions, not only that you carried out instructions.
5. Tell me about a time you stuck with something difficult.
This is perseverance. Choose a real setback, what you tried, and what finally worked.
6. Tell me about something you taught yourself.
This is curiosity, and it matters for roles where Epic says it will train you. Describe how you learned it, and how you checked you had understood it.
7. Describe a time you took the lead without being asked.
Epic names leadership as a value. A class project, a club or a shift at work all count, provided you show the initiative was yours.
8. Tell me about a time you had to understand how someone else worked before you could help them.
Epic sends developers to watch how clinicians work, and project managers and engineers work closely with customers. Show that you observed and asked questions before you proposed a fix.
9. How would you explain a technical idea to someone without a technical background?
Many Epic roles work with clinicians and hospital staff. Pick a real example and show how you checked the other person understood.
10. How do you feel about travel?
Travel is part of many Epic roles, and the amount varies by job family. Read your role's page, and answer honestly about what you can commit to.
11. Tell me about a time you found a mistake others had missed.
This fits quality management and technical solutions roles in particular. Explain how you spotted it, what you did about it and what changed afterwards.
12. What questions do you have for us?
Ask about the first-year training, how projects are assigned, or what a typical customer trip involves for your role.

How to prepare for the Epic interview
- Read your role's careers page so you know the work, the travel and what Epic says it looks for.
- Prepare five or six stories that show curiosity, ingenuity, leadership, perseverance and ownership.
- Know your resume well. Epic expects honesty at every stage, so be ready to discuss anything you've listed.
- Practise explaining your thinking out loud, ideally in a mock interview.
- Take the assessments in one focused sitting, and ask HR first if you're unsure whether any outside aid is permitted.
- Prepare two or three questions about the role, training and travel.
Practising realistic work tasks
Interviews reward prepared stories. Assessments reward judgement, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Epic Systems and doesn't use Epic's assessments or questions.
