Datadog Interview Process and Interview Questions

The short answer

Datadog’s interview process starts with a screen by phone or Zoom, then face-to-face interviews that may be several rounds or panels, a take-home project for some roles and an executive interview for some roles. The interviewing team then meets to choose, and your recruiter makes the offer. Datadog says the exact steps vary by role and team, and it doesn’t publish a timeline.

  • Datadog says one of the steps is expected to happen in person.
  • Its AI guidelines bar AI tools in live coding and non-technical interviews unless you’re told otherwise.
  • Some roles have AI-assisted coding interviews where AI use is expected; you’ll be told in advance.
  • If you do a take-home or presentation, expect to explain your choices live.

Datadog's interview process, as its careers site describes it, is an initial screen, face-to-face interviews that may be several rounds or panels, a take-home project for some roles and an executive interview for some roles. Then the interviewing team meets to choose, and your recruiter makes the offer. Datadog's candidate experience page says the structure varies by role and team.

Datadog describes itself as an observability and security platform. Everything below comes from its own careers pages, linked as we go. Where Datadog doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Datadog interview process?

It's a recruiter-led sequence of a screen, face-to-face interviews and, for some roles, a take-home and an executive round. Your recruiter is your main contact and a recruiting coordinator schedules the interviews. Datadog asks you to tell your recruiter about any deadlines you have.

What happens in the Datadog initial screen?

Datadog says the initial screen is a conversation to get to know you and hear your career aspirations, usually by phone or Zoom with a recruiter and/or the hiring manager. Be ready to explain why this role, why now and what you've worked on most recently.

What are Datadog's face-to-face interviews like?

They may be several rounds or panels with the recruiter, the hiring manager or other team members. Virtual interviews run on Zoom, and for a panel you stay on the same link. Datadog says one of the steps is expected to happen in person; onsite interviews are offered for certain roles and office hubs, and your recruiter and coordinator arrange any travel.

Datadog doesn't publish the content of each round. Its AI guidelines mention live coding and technical assessments, AI-assisted coding interviews for certain roles, and non-technical interviews covering role knowledge, people management and cross-functional experience. Prepare for the ones that fit your role, and ask your recruiter which you'll get.

Does Datadog give a take-home assignment?

Some roles do. Datadog says your recruiter will walk you through the project's expectations and scope. Its AI guidelines add that the work should reflect your own conclusions, and that you should expect to answer questions live about why you presented certain ideas or reached certain recommendations.

Is there an executive interview at Datadog?

For some roles, yes. Datadog says the final step for some roles is an interview with an executive leader. It doesn't say which roles.

Can you use AI in a Datadog interview?

Only where Datadog says so. Its AI guidelines, last updated 13 May 2026, say:

SituationDatadog's rule
Resume and cover letterAI help is fine, but the materials must accurately represent your skills
Take-home or presentationYour own work and conclusions; expect live questions on it
AI-assisted coding interviewFor certain roles, when you're told in advance. AI use is expected and you should explain how you used it
Live coding and technical assessmentsNo AI tools unless stated otherwise
Non-technical interviewsNo AI tools; using them may get your application disqualified

Datadog says misuse of AI tools, or failing to disclose their use, may lead to disqualification. Once an interview has started, don't use AI unless you were told in advance that the interview assesses AI skills.

Does Datadog use an online assessment?

Datadog's careers pages mention live coding and technical assessments but don't name a testing platform or describe an online test. If you're sent one, your recruiter or the invitation will say what it covers.

How long does the Datadog hiring process take?

Datadog doesn't publish a timeline. It says your recruiter will be in touch shortly after your interview with next steps and expected timelines. For early career roles, Datadog says it typically posts jobs in September for the following year's interns and co-ops, and most interviews happen between September and March.

What happens after the Datadog interviews?

The interviewing team meets to choose the best candidate, and if it's you, your recruiter makes the offer. Anyone who spoke with the hiring team gets a short survey about the process.

Common Datadog interview questions

Datadog doesn't publish its interview questions. These are questions to prepare for, based on what Datadog says about its process, its AI guidelines and its culture line: "solve tough problems, innovate pragmatically, and grow together".

  1. "Why Datadog?" Be specific about the product area of the role. Datadog sells observability and security tooling, so connect your answer to the users of that team's product.
  2. "Tell me about your career so far and what you want next." Datadog says the screen is about your career aspirations. Give a short arc and a clear reason this role is the next step.
  3. "Tell me about the hardest problem you've solved recently." Datadog says its people "solve tough problems". Explain the problem, what made it hard, your part, and the outcome.
  4. "Tell me about a time you chose a simpler solution over an ideal one." This maps to "innovate pragmatically". Name the trade-off, what you gave up and how it worked out.
  5. "How would you find out why a service is slow?" For engineering and technical roles. Talk through what you'd measure, where you'd look first and how you'd narrow it down.
  6. "Walk me through your take-home. Why did you make these choices?" Datadog says to expect this. Know your reasoning and the alternatives you rejected.
  7. "How did you use AI here, and why?" In an AI-assisted coding interview, Datadog expects you to explain your use of AI. Show where you checked or overrode its output.
  8. "Tell me about a time you got critical feedback." This maps to "grow together". Say what changed in your work afterwards.
  9. "Tell me about working with another team to ship something." Datadog's non-technical interviews cover cross-functional experience. Show how you handled a disagreement.
  10. "How would you explain to a customer why their monitoring alert fired?" For sales and technical solutions roles. Datadog's customers use its observability tooling, so show you can adjust the detail to the audience.
  11. "What questions do you have for us?" Ask about the team's current problems and how success in the role is judged.

How to prepare for the Datadog interview process

  1. Ask your recruiter for the loop. Datadog says the structure varies by role; your recruiter can tell you which stages you'll have.
  2. Read the AI guidelines and check, before each interview, whether AI use is allowed in it.
  3. Prepare five or six STAR stories covering a hard problem, a pragmatic trade-off, feedback, cross-team work and a mistake.
  4. Rehearse explaining your own work. If you do a take-home, practise defending each decision out loud.
  5. Know the product. Read about the area of Datadog the team works on, so you can talk about its users.
  6. Set up for Zoom. Datadog suggests a stable connection and a quiet, well-lit room.
  7. Do a mock interview with someone who'll give honest feedback.

Practising realistic work tasks

Interviews reward prepared stories. Technical rounds and take-homes reward judgement on real work, and that improves with practice. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Datadog and doesn't use its assessments or questions.
