Databricks Interview Process: Stages, Rounds, Questions

The short answer

Databricks’ interview process runs from a recruiter call to a pre-onsite screen (a hiring manager screen, technical assessment or skill evaluation), an onsite loop of typically four to six interviews, a presentation for some roles, reference checks and an offer. Databricks says it typically takes two to three months, and interviews are virtual on Google Meet unless your recruiter says otherwise.

  • Engineering loops cover coding, algorithms, system design and a hiring manager interview, in the language of your choice. Databricks’ guide points engineers to CoderPad to prepare.
  • Every candidate is assessed against role-specific competencies and Databricks’ six culture principles.
  • Databricks aims to share feedback within 48 hours of your final interview.
  • Databricks publishes interview prep guides for engineering, product and sales roles.

The Databricks interview process has seven steps on its careers site: finding a role, applying online, connecting with Talent Acquisition, skill assessments, interviews, reference checks, and a decision and offer. In practice that means a recruiter call, a pre-onsite screen, an onsite loop of typically four to six interviews, and references. Databricks says the whole process typically takes two to three months.

The details below come from Databricks' Interviewing With Us page and the role-specific interview prep guides it links from there, published in April 2025. Where Databricks doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the Databricks hiring process?

You apply online, talk to a recruiter, pass a pre-onsite screen, complete an onsite loop, and go through reference checks before an offer. Databricks says every candidate for a role is evaluated against the same core competencies and its culture principles, and its hiring teams complete unconscious bias training. You can also ask to speak with a member of one of its Employee Resource Groups during the process.

The rounds depend on the job. Databricks' own prep guides lay them out for three role types:

RoleRounds in Databricks' prep guide
Back-end software engineerRecruiter screen (30 min), technical screen (1 hour), team matching, full panel of 4–6 one-hour interviews, hiring committee, references, offer
Product managerRecruiter screen (30 min), hiring manager (45 min), panel of four 45-minute interviews, second panel of one, take-home assignment, references, offer
Account executiveRecruiter screen (30 min), hiring manager (1 hour), panel of 2–3 one-hour interviews, 1-hour presentation, references, offer

For engineers, team matching and the hiring committee are internal reviews: Databricks says there's nothing for you to prepare.

How do you apply to Databricks?

Apply through Databricks' careers site. Databricks suggests reflecting on the challenges you've overcome and the achievements that shaped your career before choosing a role. You can apply to several roles; if you do, tailor your résumé to each one.

Watch for scams. Databricks says on its recruitment fraud page that official emails come only from addresses ending @databricks.com or @goodtime.io (its meeting tool), and that it never asks candidates for money or financial information.

What happens in the Databricks recruiter call?

It's an initial conversation about your background and your interest in Databricks. In Databricks' engineering, product and sales guides it lasts about 30 minutes. Have a short answer ready to "why Databricks, and why this role?"

What is the Databricks technical screen or skill assessment?

The pre-onsite screen depends on the role. Databricks says it may be a hiring manager screen, a technical assessment or a skill evaluation.

  • Engineering: a one-hour technical screen. Databricks' engineering guide points candidates to CoderPad's sandbox and its supported languages to prepare, and says interviews are language agnostic, though you should be fluent in the language you choose.
  • Product management: a 45-minute hiring manager interview, and later a take-home assignment on critical user journeys and a product requirements document.
  • Sales: a one-hour hiring manager interview covering your background, motivation, Databricks' offerings, deals you've won and lost, building a business, and data and AI knowledge.

Databricks doesn't publish the problems it uses or how screens are scored.

What happens in the Databricks onsite interview?

The onsite loop typically has four to six interviews with different team members. It's held virtually on Google Meet unless your recruiter says otherwise, and Databricks recommends business casual dress. Its engineering guide describes these back-end interviews:

  • Coding: production-quality code with clean organisation, thorough tests and careful edge cases, plus Big-O analysis.
  • Algorithms: data structures and problem-solving, with time and space complexity and your approach to edge cases.
  • System programming: multi-threading, synchronisation, I/O, caching and storage, written as detailed pseudocode.
  • Architecture: an end-to-end system design, likely drawn in CoderPad Draw, covering scalability, reliability, APIs, caching, replication, consistency and failure handling.
  • Domain deep dive: a technical conversation about architecture and scaling problems you've solved.
  • Cross-functional or hiring manager: a behavioural interview with an engineering leader about your career, your motivation, significant projects, collaboration and leadership. Databricks says it isn't a technical assessment, but you should explain your projects with technical depth and without your current company's internal jargon.

Front-end, full-stack and database engineers get different modules, such as front-end coding and systems, a product design interview, storage or stream processing design, and an open-book database papers interview where you can use your notes and the paper. If you're interviewing for a database role, our database interview questions guide covers the topics those interviews keep returning to.

Product managers meet interviewers on building products, bringing products to market, working with engineering and product leadership. Account executives meet field engineering and sales leaders, and give a presentation on their strategy for the first year in the role and region.

Does Databricks check references?

Yes. Reference checks are a step on Databricks' careers site and in each of its role guides, after the interviews and before the offer.

What happens after the Databricks interviews?

Databricks says it aims to share feedback within 48 hours of your final interview, though timing can vary. If you haven't heard within a week, or you need a faster answer because of a competing offer, contact your recruiter.

How long does the Databricks interview process take?

Databricks says it typically takes two to three months, depending on the role, region and hiring team. Databricks says holidays, executive-level hiring, offsites and business travel may affect the timeline.

Common Databricks interview questions and how to answer them

Databricks says its behavioural questions start with "Tell me about a time", "Describe a situation", "Give an example of" or "How do you". The questions below follow those patterns, tied to its six culture principles and its role guides. They're questions to prepare for, not a list Databricks has published. Use the STAR method for the behavioural ones.

1. Why Databricks?

The hiring manager interview covers your motivation and interest in Databricks. Name a product you've used or studied, such as Apache Spark, MLflow or the lakehouse, and connect it to the team you're joining.

2. Walk me through a significant project and how it supported your company's goals.

This comes straight from the cross-functional interview description. Explain the technical substance, your part in it and the business outcome, in terms an outsider can follow.

3. Tell me about a time you made a decision based on data, then changed it when the data changed.

Databricks says it is truth seeking: it bases decisions on data and adapts as the data changes. Show that you updated your view without ego.

4. Describe a situation where you solved a problem from first principles.

Databricks says it operates from first principles and starts with why. Show how you broke the problem down instead of copying an existing solution.

5. Give an example of a time you moved quickly under pressure.

Databricks names a bias for action: debate, plan, execute and iterate with urgency. Show speed with judgement, including how you limited the risk.

6. Tell me about a time you put a customer first.

Databricks says it is customer obsessed. For engineering roles, a customer can be an internal team using your service. Show you understood what they needed and changed your plan for it.

7. How have you raised the bar on your team?

Raise the bar is a culture principle. Talk about a standard you introduced, such as better tests, code review or a hiring practice, and what improved.

8. Tell me about a time you chose what was best for the company over what was best for your team.

Databricks says it puts the company first. Pick a real trade-off, such as giving up a project or resources, and explain your reasoning.

9. Write a function to solve this problem, with tests.

For the coding interview, Databricks looks for working, clean code, thorough tests, edge-case handling and a clear Big-O analysis. Say your plan before you write, and test as you go.

10. Design a system end to end.

In the architecture interview, clarify requirements first, then cover storage, scaling, caching, replication, consistency and failure handling. Databricks wants trade-offs explained and decisions justified.

11. Tell me about a deal you lost.

The sales hiring manager interview asks for deals won and lost. Be candid about what went wrong and what you changed afterwards.

12. How would you take this product to market and measure success?

Product managers face a "bringing products to market" interview on go-to-market plans, launches and measuring adoption. Name the metrics you'd track and why.

13. Do you have any questions for us?

Ask about the team's priorities, how it works with product or field teams, and what a strong first six months looks like.

How to prepare for a Databricks interview

  1. Download the prep guide for your role from Databricks' Interviewing With Us page.
  2. Practise in CoderPad's sandbox if you're an engineer, in the language you're most fluent in.
  3. Learn the platform. Databricks' guides point to its pages on the lakehouse, MLflow, Photon, Apache Spark and generative AI (MosaicML).
  4. Prepare six STAR stories, one for each culture principle. Our list of behavioural interview questions gives you more to practise on.
  5. Test Google Meet, including audio, camera and screen sharing, and practise moving through slides if you're presenting.
  6. Do a mock interview with someone who'll push back on your design and coding choices.
  7. Keep your current employer's information out of it. Databricks asks candidates not to share confidential material, not to use a work computer for a take-home or presentation, and to check their contract for non-compete or non-solicitation clauses.

Interviewing for a Databricks internship or new grad role

Databricks says applications for early-career roles typically open in August, in line with local academic calendars, and it hires on a rolling basis, so apply early. For software engineering, it says to brush up on data structures and algorithms, and that it evaluates code quality and cleanliness. Data science candidates should revise data science fundamentals and coding for data processing; product candidates, product management fundamentals. Most internships last 12 or 16 weeks.

Practising realistic work tasks

Databricks' interviews test how you do the real work, from production-quality code to a first-year sales plan, and that improves with practice on realistic tasks. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with Databricks and doesn't use Databricks' interview questions or assessments.
