AT&T's hiring process has five steps: apply, complete any assessments, schedule your interview, interview, and receive a conditional job offer. AT&T says you have five days to complete an assessment once you receive it, and that more than one interview may be necessary.
Everything below comes from AT&T's careers site, its published test guides and its careers blog, linked as we go. Where AT&T doesn't say something, we say so rather than guess. The interview questions are ones to prepare for; AT&T doesn't publish its questions.
The AT&T hiring process at a glance
This is the process AT&T sets out on its retail, call centre and technician careers pages.
| Step | What happens | What AT&T says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Apply | Confirm your qualifications match the job and submit your application. | No timeline published |
| 2. Assessments | You may need to complete one or more assessments. | You have 5 days to complete them once received |
| 3. Schedule interview | You get an email with a link to choose a date and time. | You pick the slot |
| 4. Interview | More than one interview may be needed. | No timeline published on the role pages |
| 5. Conditional job offer | AT&T contacts you to discuss the offer and next steps. | Background check starts only after an offer |
What is the AT&T hiring process?
You apply, complete any required assessments, book and attend your interview, and receive a conditional offer if you're selected. AT&T shows these steps on its retail sales careers page, and the same steps appear on its call centre and technician pages. It asks you to check your email, including your spam folder, throughout the process.
Useful details from AT&T's FAQ and resources page:
- One application per opening. Each opening may have different pre-screen and skill requirements, so you complete a separate application for each job.
- Track your status in the Candidate Home section of your account.
- Study guides exist for the selection process of most non-management roles.
- Background checks come after the offer. AT&T says it's a fair chance employer and does not start a background check until an offer is made.

Does AT&T have an assessment?
Many roles do. AT&T's study guides page says it may use pre-employment tests, which "may include multiple-choice tests, performance tests, interviews and/or role-play scenarios". You're told which tests your job needs during the hiring process.
AT&T publishes free study guides by job category:
| Job category | Examples of tests with study guides |
|---|---|
| Call centre | Basic Ability Test (BAT), Call Center Virtual Job Tryout, Customer Service Rep Virtual Job Tryout, Behavioral Event Interviews, Customer Service Assessment |
| Retail | Retail Sales Consultant Virtual Job Tryout, Oral Proficiency Interview |
| Sales | B2B Sales Role Play Assessment, Business Sales Virtual Job Tryout, Technical Sales Assessment |
| Technician | Basic Ability Test (BAT), Premise-Wire Technician Virtual Job Tryout, Technical/Mechanical Test III, several knowledge tests |
Download the guide for your test from that page before you start. It's AT&T's own description of the format.
The Retail Sales Consultant Virtual Job Tryout
AT&T's Retail Sales Consultant VJT guide (dated November 2022) describes a simulation-based assessment with four sections:
- Scenarios. You play a Retail Sales Consultant and pick your most likely and least likely response from four options. You can't skip or go back.
- Inventory checks. You compare product information on the shelf with the information in a box and mark each as Match or Error.
- Work background. Questions about your past work experience.
- Work style. Paired statements; you pick the one that best describes you.
There's no time limit. The guide recommends blocking 25 minutes in one place and 50 minutes in another, so allow the longer time. You can take it on a PC, Mac, tablet or phone, in one sitting. If you don't qualify, you can retake it after six months.
The scenario section is a situational judgement format. Our guide to situational judgement tests explains how that format works in general.
AT&T's own advice in the guide: there's nothing specific to study, so read the instructions carefully, think about your own experience, don't overthink the questions about yourself, and answer them honestly.
What is the AT&T interview process?
After any assessments, you get an email with a link to choose your interview time. AT&T says more than one interview may be necessary, and it doesn't publish a standard length.
Many AT&T interviews are behavioural. Its Behavioral Event Interview guide for the Customer Service Associate role describes a structured interview about your past behaviour, held face to face whenever possible, and recommends the STAR technique (situation, task, action, result). That guide says the interview measures four dimensions:
| Dimension | What AT&T says it looks for |
|---|---|
| Technology application | Grasping new concepts and applying technical knowledge to solve problems |
| Communication | Explaining clearly and persuasively, rephrasing when needed, and asking questions to find needs |
| Planning and organisation | Planning work efficiently, balancing priorities and structuring tasks |
| Problem solving | Gathering relevant information and using it to reach a solution |
If you don't pass that interview, the guide says you can retest after one year. Other roles have their own guides, so check the one for your job.
AT&T staff, including talent acquisition leaders, shared interview advice on its careers blog in July 2023: practise talking through your resume with STAR examples, research the programme, sign in to a video interview 5 to 10 minutes early, keep your camera on and choose a quiet, uncluttered background.
How long does the AT&T hiring process take?
AT&T doesn't publish a timeline for hourly roles. What it does say:
- You have five days to complete an assessment once you receive it.
- In its July 2023 careers blog post, AT&T said the process from application to offer is typically four to six weeks, depending on the programme, and some more involved programmes take longer.
- The same post said it's typically one to two weeks to find out whether you've made the next round or are getting an offer, and suggested following up about a week after your last contact.
What happens after the AT&T interview?
If you're selected, AT&T reaches out to discuss a conditional job offer and the next steps to joining. AT&T says it doesn't start a background check until an offer is made.
AT&T's interview tips say to ask about the hiring decision date and who to contact for follow-up before you leave. You can check your status in Candidate Home at any time.
Common AT&T interview questions and how to answer them
These are questions to prepare for. AT&T's interview tips ask you to be specific and share stories from past jobs or school, and its behavioural interview guides recommend STAR. Its role pages describe what it looks for: for call centre roles, staying calm under pressure with a solution-oriented mindset; for retail, being tech savvy, resourceful and good-natured; for technicians, integrity, dependability and critical thinking, always putting the customer first.
1. Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to about a minute: your background, one achievement relevant to the role and why AT&T. Be ready to talk about anything on your resume, as AT&T's recruiters advise.
2. Why should we hire you?
AT&T's own tips say this question may come up. Prepare an answer that's confident, concise and tied to the role's needs, such as customer service, sales or technical skill.
3. Why AT&T?
Name the part of the business you're applying to and why. Mention a product, service or programme you've looked into on att.jobs.
4. Tell me about a time you came up with an alternative solution to a problem at work.
This is one of the sample questions in AT&T's Behavioral Event Interview guide (the guide says its samples aren't used in the real interview). Use STAR and show how you gathered information before choosing the solution.
5. Describe a time you used logic and good judgement to solve a problem.
Another sample from the same guide. Walk through how you weighed the options and what the result was.
6. Tell me about a time you dealt with an upset customer.
For call centre and retail roles, show you stayed calm, listened, found the real need and resolved it. Finish with the outcome for the customer.
7. Tell me about a time you had to explain something technical to someone without that background.
This maps to the communication dimension: explaining clearly, checking they understood and rephrasing when needed.
8. Tell me about a time you learnt a new technology quickly.
AT&T's role pages ask for people who are tech savvy and ready to learn new technology. Show how you learnt it and used it.
9. Tell me about a time you had to juggle competing priorities.
This maps to planning and organisation. Explain how you decided what came first and how you kept everything on time.
10. Tell me about a time you met a sales or performance target.
For sales and retail roles, give the target, what you did to reach it and the result. If you missed it, say what you learnt.
11. Tell me about a time you acted with integrity when no one was watching.
AT&T's site stresses integrity, transparency and respect. Pick a real example of following a rule or correcting a mistake.
12. Are you comfortable with the schedule and physical requirements of this role?
Call centre roles ask for flexibility based on business demand, and technician roles list evenings, weekends, lifting and working at height. Answer honestly and match it to your application.
13. Do you have any questions for us?
AT&T's tips encourage you to ask your own questions. Staff quoted on its careers blog suggest asking about the company culture or what challenges you might face in the role, and to ask about the decision date.
