Electrical Engineer Resume Example
An electrical engineer resume example with summaries for each level, the technical skills to list, project bullets that show impact, and licence advice.

The short answer
A strong Electrical Engineer resume opens with a short summary, groups the skills employers will test, and backs each role with bullets that show what changed because of your work. Below is a full example, summary wording for entry level or graduate, career changer, mid level and senior candidates, and how to get through applicant tracking systems.
- One page for graduates; two pages are normal for experienced engineers with project histories.
- Use a project list or a short project line under each role so reviewers see the scale and type of work.
- Lead bullets with the engineering action (designed, calculated, tested, commissioned) and end with what happened.
An electrical engineer resume has to prove two things fast: that you can design and check systems safely, and that your work got built, commissioned or shipped. Reviewers look for the kind of systems you work on (power distribution, controls, electronics, embedded hardware), the standards and tools you use, and where you stand on licensure or chartership. This guide covers each section, wording for every career stage, project bullets you can adapt and a full example resume, with notes for US resumes and UK or Indian CVs where the conventions differ.

Experience bullet points
Design and calculations
- Designed the low-voltage distribution for a three-storey office refurbishment, from load schedule to single-line diagram, and the package passed the client’s design review first time.
- Ran short-circuit and protection coordination studies in ETAP for a manufacturing site upgrade, resolving two nuisance-tripping problems the client had lived with for years.
- Standardised the team’s cable sizing spreadsheet and checked it against the code tables, so every engineer produced calculations in the same reviewed format.
Construction, testing and commissioning
- Answered contractor queries and reviewed submittals during construction, keeping the electrical package on programme through a late change to the kitchen layout.
- Wrote the commissioning test sheets for a new switchboard and witnessed testing on site, signing off the installation with no open defects.
- Traced an intermittent fault on a pump control panel to a failing relay and redesigned the circuit with monitoring, ending repeat call-outs.
Electronics and product work
- Designed a four-layer sensor board in Altium, from schematic to layout, and brought the prototype through bench testing to a pilot run.
- Reduced board cost by consolidating two power rails after simulation showed the margin was there, with no change in test results.
What to include
Header
Name, city and country, phone, email and LinkedIn. Add your licence or chartership after your name only if you hold it (for example PE in the US or CEng in the UK).
Professional summary
Three or four lines naming your sector (power, building services, controls, electronics), the tools you use and the stage of projects you handle.
Technical skills
Group by design software, analysis tools, standards and hands-on skills. Name the exact software from the advert if you use it.
Experience and projects
Reverse chronological. For each role, name the project types, your part in them and an outcome: approved, built, commissioned, fixed or cheaper. Project lists work well for consultancy roles.
Licences and professional registration
In the US, list FE (or EIT) and PE status and the state. NCEES notes requirements vary by state licensing board. In the UK, list membership of your institution and CEng or IEng if registered.
Education
Degree, institution and dates. Graduates can add the final-year project and relevant modules; experienced engineers can keep this to one line.
Formatting
- One page for graduates; two pages are normal for experienced engineers with project histories.
- Use a project list or a short project line under each role so reviewers see the scale and type of work.
- Lead bullets with the engineering action (designed, calculated, tested, commissioned) and end with what happened.
- Use figures only from your own work that you can explain in an interview.
- Keep drawings and portfolio samples to a link; never attach confidential client drawings.
Getting past applicant tracking systems
- 1Write software names exactly as the advert does, such as ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical or Revit.
- 2Spell out and abbreviate key terms once, for example “programmable logic controller (PLC)”.
- 3Put licences and registrations in plain text in their own section, not only in the header.
- 4Use standard headings: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, Licences.
- 5Avoid tables, columns and images for the main content.
Common mistakes
- Listing every tool from university without showing project use.
- Writing duties (“responsible for electrical design”) without naming the systems or outcome.
- Leaving out licensure or chartership status when the advert asks for it.
- Hiding the sector: a power engineer and an electronics engineer read very differently to a recruiter.
- Sharing client drawings or project details covered by confidentiality.
Common questions
Should I put my PE licence on my resume?
Yes, after your name and in a licences section, with the state. If you have passed the FE exam but are not yet licensed, list EIT or EI status. NCEES describes the usual US path as an accredited degree, the FE exam, experience and the PE exam, with details set by each state board.
How long should an electrical engineer resume be?
One page for graduates and early-career engineers. Two pages are normal once you have several years of projects, as long as each line shows the systems you worked on and your part in them.
What changes for a UK CV?
Use the word CV, list your institution membership and any Engineering Council registration such as CEng or IEng, and leave out date of birth, marital status and nationality, as the National Careers Service advises.
Should I include a project list?
For consultancy and building services roles, yes. A short list of projects with the type, your role and the stage you covered helps reviewers judge your experience quickly.
