The xAI interview process has four steps: an application reviewed by technical team members, a short screening interview, a set of technical interviews and an offer. xAI's careers page says it generally doesn't use recruiters for assessments, so technical team members read your application from the start.
Everything below comes from xAI's careers page and job postings, linked as we go. Where xAI doesn't say something, we say so. Detail from older xAI job postings is labelled as such, because the current postings no longer describe the interviews.
A note on the name: SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026. The careers page and job postings now call the AI business SpaceXSI. Postings still sit on xAI's job board, and the hiring steps on the careers page are the same four.
The xAI hiring process at a glance
| Step | What happens | What xAI says about timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Application | Your CV and a statement of exceptional work are reviewed by technical team members. | Not published |
| 2. Screening interview | A short interview: short technical questions and a review of your background. | Older postings: 15 minutes |
| 3. Technical interviews | Sessions that go deep on your technical expertise and how you approach complex problems. | One older posting: goal of finishing within one week |
| 4. Offer | Extended if you've shown "the exceptional skills and mindset" xAI is looking for. | Not published |
What is the xAI interview process?
You apply with a CV and a statement of exceptional work, pass a short screen, complete several technical interviews and receive an offer if you're selected. These four steps are listed under "Interview process" on x.ai/careers.
Cohesyve
Hiring for roles like the ones at xAI?
Cohesyve takes a job description, finds candidates, reaches out to them and runs an AI job simulation of the real work, then returns a ranked shortlist. Ten candidates free, no card.
How does xAI review applications?
Technical team members read your CV and your statement of exceptional work. xAI says "we generally do not use recruiters for assessments", so write the statement for an engineer or researcher in your field.
The statement is where you show the best thing you've built or discovered. Keep it concrete:
- What you made and why it was hard.
- What you personally did, separate from what the team did.
- What happened as a result: who used it, what it unlocked, what it replaced.
- A link to code, a paper, a demo or a write-up, where you can share one.
One strong piece of work, described precisely, reads better than a list of projects.
What happens in the xAI screening interview?
xAI describes it as a short interview to learn about you and check the role fits, and tells you to "prepare for short technical questions and a review of your background". Older xAI postings called it a 15 minute "phone interview" with "basic questions" from a member of the team.
In a short call, there's little time to warm up. Have a two-minute summary of your background ready, know your statement of exceptional work in detail, and be ready for quick questions on the fundamentals of your field.
What are the xAI technical interviews?
The careers page says these are sessions that "dive deep into your technical expertise", to understand "how you approach complex problems and think critically". It doesn't list the rounds for current roles.
Older xAI postings did, and they varied by role:
| Older posting | Technical interviews listed |
|---|---|
| Member of Technical Staff, Ads Product | Coding assessment in a language of your choice; systems hands-on live problem-solving session; project deep-dive presenting your past exceptional work to a small audience; meet and greet with the wider team |
| Exceptional Software Engineer, London | At least two: a coding interview in Rust or C++, and a distributed systems design interview |
The same Ads Product posting said "our goal is to finish the main process within one week" and that all interviews ran on Google Meet. Treat these as earlier examples; ask your interviewer which rounds your role has.
Does xAI use an online assessment?
xAI doesn't name a test platform. One older posting described a coding assessment "in a language of your choice" as one of the technical interviews, with a live systems session alongside it. For general practice, our question banks for software engineer interviews and machine learning engineer interviews cover the ground most technical rounds draw on.
How long does the xAI hiring process take?
xAI doesn't publish a timeline for current roles. One older posting (Member of Technical Staff, Ads Product) said: "Our goal is to finish the main process within one week." How long the application review takes isn't stated anywhere we checked.
What happens before an xAI offer?
The careers page says xAI extends an offer if you've "demonstrated the exceptional skills and mindset" it wants. A current Exceptional Software Engineer posting adds: "You will get clarity on your first project before an offer." Ask about that project before you decide.
xAI interview questions
xAI doesn't publish its questions. These are the topics its careers page and postings point to, with how to answer each one for xAI.
1. Walk me through your most exceptional piece of work.
xAI asks for a statement of exceptional work and one older posting included a project deep-dive presented to a small audience. Pick one project. Explain the problem, the constraints, the decisions you made, what failed and the result. Expect follow-up questions on every technical choice.
2. Tell me about your background.
The screen includes "a review of your background". Keep it to two minutes: where you've worked or studied, the hardest thing you've done, and why that leads to this role.
3. Why do you want to work at xAI?
xAI's postings say it wants people who believe "truth-seeking AI is the most important and challenging problem", and its mission is to "understand the universe". Say what you believe about that in your own words, and connect it to the specific team: Grok models, Colossus infrastructure or a product.
4. Short technical questions in your field.
The careers page warns you to expect them at the screen. Revise the fundamentals of the role: data structures and complexity for software roles, training and evaluation basics for ML roles, networking and storage for infrastructure roles. Answer briefly and precisely; say so when you don't know.
5. Solve this coding problem in the language of your choice.
One older posting listed a coding assessment in a language of your choice. Pick the language you're fastest in. State your approach before typing, test with an edge case, and talk through trade-offs as you go.
6. Fix or build this, live.
One older posting described a "systems hands-on" session: practical skills in live problem-solving. Practise debugging unfamiliar code under time pressure. Narrate what you're checking and why, so the interviewer can follow your reasoning.
7. Design a distributed system for this workload.
One older London posting listed a distributed systems design interview. Start with requirements and scale, sketch the components, then go deep on the hardest part: consistency, failure handling or throughput. Name the trade-offs you're choosing.
8. How do you approach a problem you've never seen before?
xAI says it wants to understand "how you approach complex problems and think critically". Describe a real example: how you broke the problem down, what you tested first, and how you knew you were right.
9. Tell me about a time you had to move fast.
xAI describes itself as driven by "a strong sense of urgency". Pick an example where speed mattered and explain what you cut, what you kept and how you avoided breaking things.
10. How do you handle being moved to the most urgent problem?
The Exceptional Software Engineer posting says you'll "work on the most critical product or technical challenge at any given time". Show you can drop a plan, get up to speed quickly and still finish work properly.
11. What work are you proudest of, and how was it judged?
Postings ask for people who "take pride in your work and thrive in meritocratic environments". Choose work judged on results you can point to, and be honest about your share of it.
12. Can you work in person at one of our offices?
xAI says it prioritises in-person work and hires in Palo Alto, Seattle, Tennessee and London. Know which office you're applying to and be ready to confirm you can work there. xAI says it supports visa sponsorship.
How to prepare for the xAI interview process
- Write the statement of exceptional work first. It's what the technical team reads. Make it specific, with links.
- Prepare a two-minute background summary for the short screen.
- Revise the fundamentals of your field for the screen's short technical questions.
- Practise coding live in your strongest language, out loud.
- Practise one systems or design problem relevant to the team, if the role is infrastructure or backend.
- Rehearse a project deep-dive: slides or a whiteboard walk-through of your best work, with every decision explained.
- Read about the team's product on x.ai, so "why xAI" has specifics.
- Ask about your first project before you accept, as xAI's postings say you'll get clarity on it.
For the behavioural questions, our STAR method guide shows how to structure an example, and a mock interview with an engineer you trust will show you where your answers drift.
Practising realistic work tasks
Technical interviews reward practice on real problems, done under time pressure. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with xAI and doesn't use xAI's assessments or questions.
