Two weeks notice means telling your employer you're resigning and that your last day will be two weeks from now. In the US it's a widely followed courtesy rather than a fixed legal rule. In the UK and India, your contract decides how much notice you give.
This guide covers whether two weeks' notice is required where you work, how to resign without burning bridges, a two weeks notice letter template you can copy, and what to expect after you hand it in. It's general information, not legal advice. If your situation is unusual, check with HR or an employment adviser.
Is two weeks notice required?
Usually not by law in the US, but often by contract or policy elsewhere. The table sums it up.
| Country | What sets your notice | What the official source says |
|---|---|---|
| US | Your contract, offer letter or employee handbook | The Department of Labor says that outside discrimination, whistleblower and similar protections, how a job ends is governed by any private contract between employer and employee. It sets no notice period for employees. Two weeks is custom |
| UK | Your contract, with a legal minimum | GOV.UK says you must give at least a week's notice if you've been in your job more than a month. Your contract may ask for more |
| India | Your appointment letter or employment contract | Check your terms of employment and HR policy for your notice period before you resign |
United States
Our glossary explains at-will employment, the arrangement common in the US. In practice, two weeks is the courtesy most employers expect, and leaving with less can cost you a good reference or rehire status. Some roles, especially senior ones or those with a written contract, set a longer notice period, so read your paperwork.
Notice can also affect when you're paid. In California, for example, if you don't have a written contract for a fixed period and you give at least 72 hours' notice, your final wages, including accrued vacation, are due at the time you quit. Quit without that notice and they're due within 72 hours. Other states have their own final pay rules, so check your state labour department.
United Kingdom
Your contract or written statement of employment sets your notice. If it doesn't say, the legal minimum is one week once you've worked there for more than a month. According to GOV.UK:
- Your contract says whether notice must be in writing. If it doesn't, you can resign verbally, but written notice is sensible if you might need to refer to it later.
- If you resign in the heat of the moment and change your mind, tell your employer immediately. They can choose whether to accept the resignation.
Acas says your notice period starts the day after you tell your employer, unless your contract says otherwise. Your employer may put you on garden leave for some or all of your notice period.
India
Look for your notice period in your appointment letter, employment contract or HR policy. Read it carefully, along with any clause about buying out or shortening notice, and confirm your last working day and relieving letter with HR in writing. Your relieving and experience letters matter for background verification at your next job.
How do you give two weeks notice?
Line up the new job, check your contract, tell your manager first, then send a short letter.
- Get the new offer in writing, and make sure any conditions, like a background check, are cleared or close to it.
- Check your notice period in your contract, offer letter or handbook, and any rules on unused holiday or PTO.
- Work out your last day. Count from the day after you tell your employer if you're in the UK, unless your contract says otherwise.
- Tell your manager first, in person or on a video call. Don't let them hear it from someone else.
- Send your letter or email straight after the conversation, to your manager and HR.
- Offer a handover plan, and then follow through.
- Stay professional to the last day. People remember how you leave.
What to say in the meeting (example):
"Thanks for making time. I wanted to tell you first that I've accepted another role, and I'm handing in my notice. My last day will be [date]. I've really valued working with you, and I want to make the handover as smooth as I can. I'll send you a short letter today and a draft handover plan by [day]."
You don't have to explain why you're leaving or where you're going. If you're asked, a short, positive answer is enough.

Two weeks notice letter template
Keep it to a few lines. It's a record of the date, not a place for feedback.
Example letter:
Dear [manager's name], Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation from my position as [job title] at [company]. My last day of work will be [date], two weeks from today. Thank you for the opportunities I've had here. I'll do everything I can to hand over my work smoothly over the next two weeks, and I'm happy to help train my replacement. Kind regards, [Your name]
Shorter email version (example):
Subject: Resignation, [your name] Hi [name], following our conversation today, I'm confirming my resignation from my role as [job title]. My last working day will be [date]. Thank you for your support. I'll share a handover plan by [day]. Best, [your name]
For a UK version, swap "two weeks" for your contractual notice period, for example "one month", and state the last day. In India, add a line asking HR to confirm your last working day and the process for your relieving letter.
What happens after you hand in your notice?
A few things can happen, and it helps to be ready for each.
| What happens | What to do |
|---|---|
| Your employer accepts and you work your notice | Agree a handover plan and a goodbye message |
| They ask you to leave straight away | Ask in writing whether you'll be paid for the notice period and when your final pay arrives |
| You're put on garden leave (UK) | You stay employed and paid but don't work. Check your contract on starting a new job early |
| You get a counter-offer | Think about why you wanted to leave. A pay rise may not fix them |
| They ask for an exit interview | Be factual and constructive. Don't use it to settle scores |
Before your last day, save your payslips and contract, return equipment, and connect with colleagues on LinkedIn. Ask a manager or senior colleague whether they'd be a reference.
What should you avoid when resigning?
- Resigning before the new offer is final. Conditional offers can fall through.
- Telling colleagues before your manager.
- Putting criticism in the letter. It goes on your file.
- Taking company files or client data with you.
- Coasting through your notice. Your last two weeks are what people remember.
FAQs
Can I give less than two weeks notice?
In the US, often yes, unless your contract says otherwise, but it may cost you a reference or rehire eligibility. In the UK and India, your contract sets your notice, so if you want to leave sooner, ask your employer whether they'll agree to an earlier date and get it in writing.
Do weekends count in two weeks notice?
Two weeks normally means 14 calendar days, so weekends count. If your last day would fall on a weekend, pick the Friday before or agree a date with your manager.
Can my employer refuse my resignation?
Your employer can expect you to work the notice period in your contract. In the UK, a resignation made in the heat of the moment can be accepted or not if you try to take it back, according to GOV.UK.
Should I mention my new job in my notice letter?
No need. The letter only has to say you're resigning and give your last day.
What if I'm being laid off instead?
Then you're not giving notice; your employer is. Different rules apply. Start with what to do when you get laid off and laid off vs fired. If you're asked why you left in a later interview, see reason for leaving a job.
