SHL and Hogan are two of the best-known names in workplace assessment, and both measure personality and reasoning. Their emphasis differs. SHL sells a broad suite that covers most of what an employer might want to test, at any volume. Hogan focuses on personality, measured from three angles, for hiring and for developing people, leaders especially.
This comparison uses what each company says on its own website, checked in October 2026. One disclosure: Cohesyve, which publishes it, sells job simulations for hiring. We cover that as a separate option at the end.
What is the difference between SHL and Hogan?
SHL measures ability, personality, motivation and skills; Hogan measures personality in depth. Choose SHL when you need one vendor for graduate, volume and professional hiring, including reasoning tests and skills tests. Choose Hogan when the decision turns on personality, especially for leaders, where how someone behaves under pressure matters as much as how they perform day to day.
SHL describes itself as offering "talent acquisition and talent management solutions" built on "people science". Hogan says it examines "personality from every angle": the bright side, the dark side and the inside.

Comparing SHL and Hogan? Try a third option on a live role
Cohesyve takes a job description, finds candidates, reaches out to them and runs an AI job simulation of the real work, then returns a ranked shortlist. Ten candidates free, no card.
What does SHL measure?
SHL's catalogue covers most kinds of workplace test. Its Verify tests measure numerical, verbal, inductive and deductive reasoning; our guide to SHL tests explains the formats. The OPQ measures working preferences and maps them to SHL's Universal Competency Framework; SHL says it takes 20 minutes and is offered in 37 languages. The MQ measures motivation. Around these sit situational judgement tests, job-focused assessments, skills and coding tests, simulations for call centre and business roles, language tests, video interviews and 360 feedback.
SHL also sells development products, including leader development, high-potential identification and succession planning, so the same data can follow an employee after hiring.
What does Hogan measure?
Hogan's three core inventories look at personality from different sides:
- Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI): the "bright side", or how someone behaves when they are at their best.
- Hogan Development Survey (HDS): the "dark side", tendencies that "emerge in times of increased strain" and can derail a career.
- Motives, Values, Preferences Inventory (MVPI): the "inside", covering the goals, values, drivers and interests that motivate a person.

Hogan also offers cognitive assessments of reasoning and problem solving. Its FAQ says the inventories are used for several purposes, including pre-hire selection, and its site splits its work into talent acquisition and talent development.
Do you need certification to use Hogan or SHL?
For Hogan, usually yes. Hogan says "most of our products require certification" and recommends certification "or the help of a certified provider" for every product. The foundational certification teaches you to interpret the HPI, HDS and MVPI and is run as two days in person or four virtual half-days.
SHL's OPQ page says hiring managers receive a report on each candidate. SHL also runs its own certification for the OPQ and Verify, which trains people to administer and interpret them; the pages we checked don't say when it is required. Ask SHL what training it recommends for the products you choose.
Which is better for leadership hiring?
Hogan's three inventories suit leadership decisions, because the HDS addresses a question that matters more the more senior the role: how someone behaves under strain. SHL also covers leadership through the OPQ and its leader development products, and it can add reasoning tests in the same process. If you want personality depth for a small number of senior roles, Hogan fits; if you want leadership assessment inside a wider programme that also covers graduates and volume roles, SHL fits.
Which is better for high-volume hiring?
SHL. Its range of short reasoning tests, situational judgement tests, skills tests and video interviews, its 80+ ATS integrations and its 45 million assessments a year point to volume. Hogan's inventories can be used at volume, but a personality-led process that needs certified interpretation is a heavier fit for screening thousands of applicants.
Choose SHL if…
- You need cognitive, personality, situational judgement and skills tests from one vendor.
- You hire at volume or run graduate programmes.
- You want video interviews and ATS integration in the same platform.
- You want hiring data to carry into development and succession.
Choose Hogan if…
- Personality is the main question, especially for leadership roles.
- You want to see derailing behaviour under strain, which the HDS is built to measure.
- You have certified staff, or will work with a certified partner, to interpret results.
- You use assessment for development and coaching as much as for selection.
A third option: job simulations from your job description
Hogan measures personality traits that predict how someone might work, and SHL adds reasoning tests plus skills tests and simulations from its own catalogue. Some teams want a simulation of the specific role they are hiring for. Cohesyve, which publishes this comparison, works from your job description: it sources and contacts candidates, puts them through an AI job simulation of the real work, and returns a ranked shortlist, so interviews go to the strongest applicants. Plans are subscriptions sized to annual hiring volume, from $199 a month. A team that wants a Hogan or OPQ personality profile for leadership roles would still use one of these two vendors.
