IBM Interview Process, Questions and Online Assessment

The short answer

IBM hires in five steps: you apply online, IBMers with expertise in your field review your application, you may take one or two online assessments (coding, video, English language or work behaviours), you interview by phone, video, in person or at an assessment centre, and IBM shares its decision after the final interview. IBM says there is no overall timeframe it can share.

  • IBM asks you to complete online assessments within 7 days of the invite, and advises leaving enough time to finish them in one sitting.
  • Interviews are structured or behavioural and focus on role-related technical skills and behaviours.
  • IBM’s recruiters ask what you achieved and how you measured it, so prepare stories with results.
  • AI is fine for interview practice and grammar help, but not during assessments or live interviews.

IBM's interview process has five steps: application, screening, online assessment, interview and decision. The assessments and interview format depend on the role, and IBM doesn't publish an overall timeline.

Everything below comes from IBM's own application steps and FAQs and its careers blog, linked as we go. Where IBM doesn't say something, we say so.

What is the IBM hiring process?

You apply online, IBM screens your application, you may take online assessments, you interview, and IBM shares its decision. Details from IBM's application page:

  • You can't edit an application after you submit it. You can withdraw it and reapply while the role is still open.
  • You don't need every requirement. IBM says candidates who don't meet 100% of the requirements but have a strong background may still apply.
  • A quick "No Longer Under Consideration" status usually means a basic requirement for the role wasn't met.
  • Recruiters may not contact every applicant directly, and hiring varies by location and region. Check the candidate portal for your status.
  • Accommodations are available. Candidates with disabilities can confidentially ask for an adjustment.

IBM's recruiters advise tailoring your CV to each job by taking keywords from its description, and keeping it concise and proofread.

What is the IBM online assessment?

Depending on the role, IBM may ask you to complete one or two online assessments. Its assessment FAQ says they "could include coding assessments, video assessments, English language assessments, or IBM work behaviours assessments".

AssessmentWhat IBM says it involves
CodingMultiple-choice questions or coding challenges that measure programming knowledge and ability
VideoYou answer interview questions on webcam and microphone
English languageText-based multiple-choice questions that measure English proficiency
Work behavioursNamed in IBM's assessment FAQ; IBM doesn't describe its format

IBM's own tips:

  • Complete it within 7 days of the invite, leave enough time to finish them in one sitting, and check whether each assessment is timed.
  • Use any practice runs to get used to the format.
  • Go with your first reaction where you can, and don't overthink.
  • When asked to pick between two statements, choose the one you agree with slightly more.
  • Work somewhere quiet, and take a break and a drink before you start.

IBM doesn't publish question counts, time limits, retake rules or the platform it uses, so treat the figures you read on prep sites as unconfirmed. For technical roles, IBM suggests practising on LeetCode, Pramp and HackerRank; our guide to HackerRank tests explains how that platform scores coding answers. If you get a video assessment, our guide to one-way video interviews covers how recorded answers work.

What is the IBM interview process?

After you pass the assessments, you may be invited to an interview by phone, video or in person, or to an assessment centre. IBM says the assessment centre includes a group exercise and an in-person interview, and that its interviews are structured or behavioural, focused on the technical skills and behaviours the role needs.

IBM doesn't publish how many rounds to expect or how long each lasts. Ask your recruiter; IBM's recruiters say candidates should ask about the selection process.

Two things IBM says its recruiters look for:

  • Measurable outcomes. Recruiters ask what you achieved, how you measured success and what your role was.
  • AI skills. IBM says it is looking for AI skills, knowledge and experience.

What happens after the IBM interview?

IBM shares its decision after the final interview. If you accept an offer, you receive the documents and guidance for onboarding. IBM says there is no overall timeframe it can share, so use the candidate portal and your recruiter for updates. IBM's recruiters also suggest asking for feedback after your interview.

Common IBM interview questions and how to answer them

IBM lists three core beliefs on its culture page: dedication to every client's success; innovation that matters, for our company and for the world; and trust and personal responsibility in all relationships. Its culture principles are Purpose, Trust, Collaboration, Growth and Support. These are questions to prepare for, not a list IBM has published.

1. Tell me about yourself.

IBM's recruiters suggest having three or four selling points ready. Give your current role or studies, the experience most relevant to this job and why you want it, in about a minute.

2. Why IBM?

IBM's recruiters say candidates who do their homework impress them. Name the business area, a product or a piece of recent IBM work that connects to the role, and say what draws you to it.

3. Walk me through a project and what you achieved.

IBM says recruiters ask what you achieved, how you measured success and what your role was. Give the result in numbers where you can, and make your own contribution clear.

4. Tell me about a time you worked with a client or stakeholder to solve their problem.

This maps to dedication to every client's success. Explain what they needed, how you found out, and what changed because of your work.

5. Tell me about something new you built or improved.

This maps to innovation that matters. Pick a change with a real effect, explain the problem it solved, and how you checked it worked.

6. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. What did you do?

This tests trust and personal responsibility. Own it, say how you fixed it and what you changed afterwards.

7. How have you used AI in your work or studies?

IBM says it is looking for AI skills, knowledge and experience. Describe a specific use, what you built or learned, and its limits. Don't overstate your experience.

8. Tell me about a time you worked in a team that disagreed.

This maps to IBM's Collaboration principle. Use the STAR method, describe the disagreement fairly and focus on how the team reached a decision.

9. Tell me about a skill you taught yourself.

IBM's recruiters say to show a growth mindset, and Growth is one of its culture principles. Explain what you learned, how, and where you used it.

10. What would you do if you didn't know the answer to a technical question?

IBM's interview tips say it's fine to say you don't know. Say so, explain how you'd work it out, and reason aloud through what you do know.

11. Solve this coding problem and talk through your approach.

IBM's coding assessment uses coding challenges, and its interviews focus on role-related technical skills. Explain your plan before you code, test edge cases and discuss trade-offs.

12. Do you have any questions for us?

IBM's recruiters say to treat the interview as a conversation. Ask about the team, how it works together, its culture and how people grow in the role.

How to prepare for an IBM interview

  1. Match your experience to each requirement in the job description, as IBM's interview tips suggest.
  2. Storyboard three or four stories that show the role's skills, with your actions, results and the metrics behind them.
  3. Research IBM and the role: IBM's careers blog, its news and the products the team works on.
  4. For technical roles, practise on LeetCode, Pramp or HackerRank, as IBM suggests.
  5. Practise aloud and do a mock interview. IBM allows AI for interview preparation and mock interviews, not during the real thing.
  6. Prepare questions about the team, culture and growth.
  7. Ask for feedback afterwards, as IBM's recruiters suggest.

Practising realistic work tasks

IBM's recruiters want measurable outcomes, so concrete examples of real work matter. Cohesyve, which publishes this guide, runs practice job simulations for your role, with a scored report on where you lost marks. It isn't affiliated with IBM and doesn't use IBM's assessments or questions.
