Contact centre hiring has a particular problem. Agents are often hired in batches, the applicant pool is large, and the job looks easy on paper. Then a new starter sits down with a headset, a customer who is upset, three windows of software and a notes field, and the gaps show quickly.
A call center assessment test exists to find those gaps before the offer. This guide covers what to test, which formats work, sample tasks you can copy, how to score them, and how candidates can prepare.
Disclosure: Cohesyve publishes this guide and sells job simulations. Other vendors are described from their own public pages as of October 2026.
What is a call center assessment test?
A call center assessment test is a pre-employment test that checks whether a candidate can handle customer contacts the way the job requires. The strongest versions are simulations: the candidate listens to a customer, looks up information in a mock system, types notes and chooses or speaks a response.
The skills it should cover come straight from the job. O*NET, the US occupational database, lists Active Listening, Speaking, Reading Comprehension, Critical Thinking and Monitoring among the core skills for customer service representatives, and its listed tasks include conferring with customers by phone and keeping records of each interaction. It also lists CRM, contact centre and helpdesk software among the tools of the role. A contact centre assessment should therefore test talking, listening, reading a screen and writing a record, together.
What skills should a contact centre assessment measure?
Measure the five skills that decide whether an agent resolves contacts well: listening, empathy, multitasking (typing while talking), systems navigation and problem resolution. Language clarity matters too where the role is voice-based.
| Skill | What it looks like on the job | How to test it |
|---|---|---|
| Active listening | Catches the real issue, the account detail and the customer's mood on the first pass | Play a recorded or AI customer call; ask the candidate to identify the issue and key facts |
| Empathy and tone | Acknowledges frustration without over-apologising; stays calm | Voice or chat role-play with an upset customer, scored on a rubric |
| Typing while talking | Writes accurate, short call notes during the conversation | Candidate types a contact summary during or straight after a simulated call |
| Systems navigation | Finds the right record, policy or menu option quickly | Mock CRM or knowledge base with a lookup task |
| Problem resolution | Applies the procedure, solves the issue or escalates correctly | Scenario with a policy document; candidate chooses or explains the fix |
| Spoken clarity | Is easily understood; confirms details back | Short spoken answer or voice role-play |
O*NET's abilities for the role include Oral Comprehension, Speech Clarity and Speech Recognition, which is why a voice element matters for phone roles. For chat-only roles, written tone and accuracy take its place. Our guide on how to assess customer service skills goes deeper on each.

What does a call center pre employment test look like?
Most call center pre employment tests use one or more of the formats below, and the larger vendors combine them. The table describes each format from vendors' own public pages.
| Format | What the candidate does | Example from a vendor's public page |
|---|---|---|
| Call simulation | Handles simulated inbound calls at a mock workstation | LOMA's Contact Center Simulation: a series of inbound calls, showing keyboard and navigation skills; measures rapport, discovering needs, problem-solving, sales orientation, teamwork and multitasking |
| Call or chat simulation with system | Listens to a call or works a chat while using a mock contact centre system | SHL's call centre simulations: scored on service orientation, issue resolution, attentiveness, navigation and typing; industry versions for banking, healthcare, telecom, utilities and retail |
| Chat simulation | Answers customers in a simulated live chat | Harver's live chat support simulation, which it presents as a realistic job preview for BPOs and contact centres |
| Multitasking games | Short games on memory and task switching | Harver's multitasking module: two games on short-term memory and switching tasks quickly |
| Typing or data entry test | Types or keys text for speed and accuracy | Offered by many libraries; see our data entry typing test guide |
| Situational judgement test | Picks the best and worst responses to written scenarios | Common across vendors; see our situational judgement test guide |
A typing test on its own tells you how fast someone types copy. It does not tell you whether they can listen to an angry customer while typing a usable note, which is the actual task. Use typing as one part of a simulation, or as a low threshold. Do not make it the main filter.
What are good sample tasks for a call center assessment?
Good sample tasks copy your most common contact types and ask for the outputs a supervisor would check. Here are four you can adapt.
1. Billing query with a lookup. A customer says they were charged twice this month. The candidate has a mock account screen with two transactions, one of them a pending authorisation. Task: explain to the customer what happened and type a two-line call note. You learn whether they read the screen carefully and can explain plainly.
2. Complaint with emotion. A customer has called three times about a delayed delivery and opens with frustration. Task: respond in a voice or chat role-play, find the order status, and agree a next step. You learn whether they acknowledge the feeling, stay on track and avoid promising what policy does not allow.
3. Cancellation request. A customer wants to cancel. A short policy note lists one retention offer the agent may make. Task: handle the call. You learn whether they listen to the reason before offering anything, and whether they process the cancellation if the customer still wants it.
4. Escalation judgement. A customer reports something outside the agent's authority, such as a suspected fraudulent transaction. Task: decide what to do and say what they would tell the customer. You learn whether they follow the procedure and set honest expectations.
For technical helpdesk roles, swap in a troubleshooting call.
How should you score a contact centre assessment?
Score it with a fixed rubric of four to six behaviours, each with written descriptions of weak, acceptable and strong performance, and have two people score a sample of responses to check they agree.
| Behaviour | Strong | Weak |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | Restates the issue correctly before acting | Answers a question the customer did not ask |
| Empathy | Acknowledges the feeling briefly, then moves to the fix | Scripted apology repeated, or none at all |
| Accuracy | Note and answer match the screen and policy | Wrong figure, wrong account or missed detail |
| Resolution | Solves or escalates correctly with a clear next step | Leaves the customer without an outcome |
| Notes | Short, factual, usable by the next agent | Missing, vague or a transcript |
Set your pass threshold by testing current agents whose performance you know. If your best agents would fail the bar, the bar is wrong. Our interview scorecard uses the same structure for the interview stage, so the two can line up.
Is a call center assessment test legal to use?
Yes, provided it is job-related and applied consistently. This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice.
- Job-relatedness. The US EEOC says a test that screens out people with disabilities must be job-related and consistent with business necessity, and that the employer stays responsible for a test's validity under the 1978 Uniform Guidelines even when a vendor supplies it.
- Adjustments. Reasonable accommodation under the ADA includes how a test is given, for example a reader. A listening-based simulation needs a clear route for candidates with hearing or speech impairments to ask for an adjustment.
- AI scoring. If software scores candidates automatically, New York City's Local Law 144 requires a bias audit no more than a year before use, a public summary of the results and notice to candidates 10 business days before use. In the EU, the AI Act's recruitment obligations apply from 2 December 2027. Our guide to AI hiring laws in 2026 covers other jurisdictions.
Where does a call center assessment fit in the hiring process?
Put it straight after the application, before any phone screen, so that every applicant is judged on the same work sample before a recruiter spends time on them.
| Stage | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Application | Basic eligibility: shifts, location or remote setup, language |
| Assessment | Simulation of two or three real contacts, scored on a rubric |
| Interview | Structured questions on the gaps the assessment showed |
| Offer and training | Use assessment results to plan coaching |
For volume hiring, this order lets a small recruiting team screen a large batch fairly. Pair it with a clear customer service representative job description so candidates know what the test will reflect. If you want a ready-made test, our customer service assessment page lists what it covers.
How does Cohesyve handle contact centre hiring?
A company gives Cohesyve a job description. Cohesyve sources candidates, runs outreach, puts them through AI job simulations of the real work, including chat simulations and voice role-plays with an AI customer, and returns a ranked shortlist. It suits teams that want call simulations without building a mock system themselves. Pricing is a subscription from $199/month billed annually, and a new account includes 10 free candidates.
How can candidates prepare for a call center assessment?
Candidates prepare best by practising the real task: talking to a customer while finding information and typing a short note. Recruiters can share this list with applicants.
- Practise a full contact. Role-play a billing or delivery complaint with a friend, typing notes as you go.
- Restate the problem. Repeat the customer's issue back before solving it. It shows you listened.
- Read the screen and the policy. Small details on the mock system are easy to miss.
- Keep notes short and factual. Write what the next agent needs: issue, action, next step.
- Check your setup. For remote tests, use a quiet room, a working headset and a stable connection.
- Ask for adjustments early. If you have a hearing, speech or other condition, tell the employer before the test.
Job seekers can practise the same kind of simulation free on Cohesyve for candidates, and our customer service representative practice page shows sample tasks.
Frequently asked questions
What is on a call center assessment test? Usually a mix of a call or chat simulation, a typing or data entry check, scenario questions and sometimes a language or multitasking test. The exact mix depends on the employer and vendor.
Is a typing test enough for call centre hiring? No. Typing speed alone misses listening, judgement and tone. Use it as one part of a simulation or as a minimum bar.
What is the difference between a call centre and a contact centre assessment? A call centre assessment focuses on phone contacts. A contact centre assessment also covers chat, email and messaging. Test the channels the agent will actually work.
How long should a contact centre assessment be? Long enough to cover two or three realistic contacts, and no longer. Take the test yourself first and ask vendors for typical completion times.
Can you fail a call center pre employment test? Employers set their own pass thresholds, so a result that misses one employer's bar may meet another's.
Should we build our own simulation or buy one? Buy if you hire agents often and want consistent scoring at volume. Build a simple one with your real scripts and policies if you hire rarely, and score it with the rubric above.
